Understanding Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded by civic groups, charitable organizations, foundations, corporations and others who believe in the importance of a good education. They realize earning a college education is an expensive proposition, and wish to offer financial support to those who demonstrate the ability and desire to build a successful future.  Some award scholarships on merit alone.  Perhaps those receiving scholarships today will one day be in a position to pay it forward.
Scholarships are not just for those at the top of the class academically.  Check each scholarship application, as the criteria for who can apply varies widely.  Through the individual essay, students can convey goals and interests in a way that will give the reviewers the confidence to know this student is serious about reaching his or her potential through higher education.
Each year, millions of scholarship dollars go unused simply because students did not apply!  Parents generally have a keener sense of what it takes to finance a college education than their students might, so we advise parents to take an active role in encouraging their child to pursue scholarship opportunities.  There is no limit to the number of scholarships a student can receive, so do not hesitate to apply to all for which you are eligible.

Finding Scholarships

Many large employers also offer scholarships to employees and/or their children, so be sure to ask your/your parents' human resources or benefits department if they have a scholarship program. Professional and trade organizations may also offer scholarships to the children of their members so inquire there as well.  College Board and others have search engines to help you find appropriate opportunities.  Feel free to do your own Internet searches too and see what comes up based on your areas of interest and personal background!

Athletic Scholarships

Please speak with your school counselor and the athletic department to learn about the athletic scholarships and recruitment process.
